The Mummy is an action / adventure series created by Stephen Sommers. It is named after its title character, the high priest-turned-mummy Imhotep.

Overview[]

The Mummy franchise has been going since the first film, back in 1999. It covers all of the films as well as all of the Mummy merchandise. The stories concern mainly the adventures of explorer and adventurer Richard “Rick” O'Connell, known more commonly as simply O’Connell, along with Evelyn O'Connell, his love interest and later wife; her brother Jonathan Carnahan and the O’Connells’ son Alex.

According to the released canon thus far, the main characters met and interacted with the cursed mummy Imhotep, while later making discoveries concerning similar ancient evils regarding religious relics, legendary artifacts, places, and subjects, often having to do with the paranormal.

The nature of the main characters’ discoveries often deal with the prevention of the 'villains' obtaining the power. The villains traditionally have been either from or associated with ancient Egypt, a concept largely inspired from the mysticism of ancient Egyptian culture and religion. In the later timeframe, the Egyptian-themed villains are more or less 'replaced' by villains and evils of other nationalities, notably Chinese characters.

Setting[]

The Mummy adventures take place mainly during the early 20th century, after World War I as well as during and after World War II. In the earlier adventures of the Scorpion King, the time frame shifts to ancient times preceding the adventures of Rick O'Connell and the misdeeds of Imhotep and Emperor Han. For context, scenes from varying epochs and locations are shown sporadically in comics and books.

In the later Mummy adventures, the setting takes the form of crossover fiction, as all fables, legends, legendary and holy objects, turn out to be true, along with the related supernatural capabilities and beings in the Mummy world.

Films[]

Thus far, there have been five films, starting with the first and original, The Mummy in 1999, its sequel, The Mummy Returns, in 2001, and its prequel, The Scorpion King, in 2002, with the newest The Mummy movie, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, being released in 2008. The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior, a prequel to The Scorpion King, also in 2008 and in 2012, The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption. Then in 2015, The Scorpion King 4: A Quest for Power was released. And in 2018, the final installment of The Mummy prequel spinoff series was released under the name, The Scorpion King: Book of Souls.

Since the release of the third installment of The Mummy series, rumors for a fourth Mummy movie ran rampant among fan sites, and all through the internet: ideas for a fourth film, possibly called The Mummy: Rise of the Aztec, mostly dwelled on Aztec Mummies in Mexico, with Antonio Banderas playing the main villain and Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello, and Luke Ford returning to portray their previous roles. However, this idea was dropped in pursuit of a shared film collection called "The Dark Universe" with The Mummy 2017 starting it off.
